About Waaywood

I have always been a ‘why’ person: “why does that work like that?”, “why do I need to do it that way?”.

This curiosity guided my passions in life - hobby woodworking, restoring bikes, painting and drawing - anything that allowed me to create. I got to a certain point in my accounting career when I had to ask myself: ‘why am I doing this?’

I decided I would rather try and do something I love and fail than to continue doing something that I didn’t find fulfilling. Following my most prominent interest and love for natural materials, I began to focus on growing my woodworking skills. I learned more about the craftsmanship working with a local woodworking company, and before long I was in my own workshop surrounded by wood, spending hours and hours learning new skills and building new pieces.

In furniture making, there is always something that I can learn, there will always be questions to be answered and there will always be another technique to master.

The feeling I get when I am creating something unique and technical that I know will last a lifetime is something I am driven to reach with every creation, and my love for this craft still grows everyday. In addition to continuing my self study I have my sights set on more formal training from leading North American woodworkers to be able to create even more thoughtfully handcrafted pieces.

There's something that happens to a space when it’s filled with quality furniture that someone has put so much care into.

While my made-to-order collection pieces help me to hone my craft and style, I’ve worked with dozens of individual and commercial clients to create their dream pieces, including kitchen tables, coffee tables, end tables, boardroom tables, credenzas, chairs, stools, benches, a crib and smaller projects like a customized toy box, picture frames, peg boards, blanket ladders and much more.

While the craftsmanship of woodworking is at the core of what we do, we’re working through how we can be a steward of good in our province.

We’re sponsoring a minor hockey player for our second year (Go Jack!), have started to mill and dry local wood that no longer has a use (ex: construction sites, downed trees), and like to think that through what we do, we’re contributing to a collaborative, sustainable and conscious future. We’d love to hear from you on how we can work together or create a beautiful piece of furniture.
